When it comes to your career in cosmetology, do you “think big”?

The idea of “thinking big” may sound like just another catchphrase used to sell self-help books or motivate small children, but it’s actually a very sound piece of advice that you can use to motivate yourself and achieve your dreams of a career in cosmetology.

What Does It Mean to Think Big?

So many of us think small. That is, we do only what is necessary in the moment to satisfy our most immediate, right-in-front-of-us needs.

Here’s an example. Take our school: Long Island Beauty School.

Every week, we have individuals contact us looking for information on a nail tech program.

Now, don’t get us wrong — a nail tech program can be the perfect program for the right person.

But there’s something we’ve noticed about nearly all of these prospective students: They often know that they want a career in cosmetology … eventually. But instead of deciding this and making a move toward getting their full cosmetology license now …they opt for the smallest possible certification instead.

In nearly every situation it’s like this. Yet inevitably, once we discuss their actual career goals and biggest dreams, it comes out that they really would like to get their cosmetology license. Only, they’re too [nervous / worried / fearful] to go for it.

This is thinking small.

Thinking big is going for what you truly want and not settling for anything less.

How to Think Big About Your Cosmetology Career Starting Today

Here’s an exercise.

Sit down with a pad of paper and a pen. Your task is to write down your dream life five years from now. Don’t get crazy. Be realistic. And don’t worry about how you write it. Just jot down the thoughts that come to your mind.

Just think about where you’d like to be. What irks you about your current living situation, job, pay, or lifestyle? What does it look like if those are not problems for you?

  • Where can you see yourself in five years if money, time, and energy are not problems?
  • We’re assuming being a cosmetology or esthetics professional fits here somewhere. So, ask yourselves these questions:
  • When you walk into work every day, what is it that you want to be doing?
  • What services do you offer?
  • What gets you excited about the idea of working?
  • “Someday,” do you want to do hair? Waxing? Facials?
  • Do you want to open your own salon?
  • Would you like to work for celebrities, on fashion runways, or in the city for elite clients?

Okay, now you’re starting to think big.

Stop Holding Yourself Back

With a cosmetology license, you can do anything from nails to skincare to hair. And it is possible to get this license no matter who you are or where you’re starting from.

No matter how busy your schedule is, what financial challenges you face, or what you don’t know about anything related to cosmetology. You don’t know it … yet. You can do this.
