Having naturally curly hair is a beautiful thing. If you are blessed with such waves and curls, you want to make sure that you are maximizing their potential. It’s easy to experience extra frizz, curl breakage, and messy waves if you don’t take care of curly hair properly. That means a combination of the right shampoo and conditioner, as well as, making sure that your styling products and methods of fixing your hair are working for your curls and not against them. Here are some tips and tricks for curly hair from the experts at Long Island Beauty School. We are the premier beauty school on Long Island for training up-and-coming hairstyling and colorist superstars.

Pick the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

Curly hair tends to be on the dry side. That’s why it’s important to shampoo with a sulfate-free product that doesn’t have any harsh detergents that will dry the hair out. You’ll also need a great conditioner that hydrates those curls to prevent frizz. Look for ones that specifically say they are for curly or coiled hair. Make sure to leave it on in the shower for the full amount of time. That’s usually around two to four minutes. It’s also helpful to have a wide-tooth comb in the shower to gently distribute that conditioner from roots to ends. When you rinse, you’ll have silky smooth strands that are ready to be styled and show off those curls.

Use Two Styling Products

Curly hair usually needs two different products to style it. The first one is a leave-in-conditioner to help reduce extra frizz. Then you want a product that further enhances your curls. That could be a gel, curl cream, or even a mousse. It’s up to you what you think will work best for your curly hair, but try a couple of them to see how they affect your curls, coils, and waves. Try not to over saturate your hair with products as well. Play with your curly hair to see which products will work best for you.

Let Curly Hair Air Dry If You Can

Curls will naturally develop the best curl pattern possible when you let your hair air dry. Then they will spring up into the exact frizz-free waves you want to rock. If you don’t have time to naturally let your hair air dry, it’s important to have a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. This will gently dry your curls without breaking up the curl pattern too much.
