Q: Why did you choose a career in beauty?
My mother was a cosmetologist and I watched her for years make money in the kitchen of our house. She introduced me to acrylic nails and I just had to take a class. In 1986 I became a Certified Nail Tech. I worked at home, in salons, taught the 250 hr licensing course at LIBS and was a state board examiner for the nail exam. I thought I had taken nails as far as I could so I decided to enrolled in cosmetology at LIBS.
Q: Where do you work now and what is your specialty?
I am currently working in LIBS as lead educator at night and can teach in the classroom or on the clinic floor. I am also a NY state board examiner for cosmetology, as well as a stylist at Lemontree in Centereach where clients can get great services without paying crazy expensive prices.
Q: What is the biggest benefit of your career choice?
Teaching fulfills my heart, mind and spirit. I have wonderful students and work with great people. In the salon I get to keep up with current styles and my own creativity. All of these years this industry has helped feed and care for my family.
Q: What is your favorite memory from LIBS?
Teaching my co-classmates nails while we were learning cosmetology together. It was so much fun.
Q: Any advice for students, new graduates or people interested in a beauty career?
It doesn’t matter how young or mature you are, keep learning. Whatever you choose to do, if you have a passion for it, you can accomplish it. It’s NEVER too late!
